The exhibition traces a little-known chapter that began after the Chernobyl disaster of 26 April 1986, when the fourth reactor at the Vladimir Ilyich Lenin nuclear power plant exploded and sent radioactive fallout across much of Europe. It focuses on the children from Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, and Moldova who were taken to Cuba for free medical treatment between 1990 and 2011, and on the documents, photographs, sound recordings, audiovisual materials, and objects gathered to reconstruct that history. The project grew out of Sonia Cunliffe’s 2011 visit to the Tarará seaside resort east of Havana and her later collaboration with journalist Maribel Acosta in 2015, which led them to consult doctors, patients, translators, research centers, hospitals, and the archives of
