About this event
The Consorci de Museus de la Comunitat Valenciana (CMCV) and the Fundación Chirivella Soriano present "Bodies That Flee. Landscapes of Barbarism", a retrospective that traces more than five decades of work by Valencian artist Isabel Oliver through some of her most emblematic series. Using a powerful and committed visual language, Oliver addresses themes such as the representation of women, violence, migration crises, and the violation of human rights. The exhibition includes the series "La mujer", "De profesión sus labores", and "Paseos por el museo", in which she revisits Western pictorial tradition from a contemporary perspective and enters into dialogue with figures such as Titian and Peter Paul Rubens. In "Landscapes of Barbarism", series including "La mercantilización del arte" and "Secuencias del Mediterráneo" denounce the brutality of war. Oliver has said that she began these later works as a release when the war in Ukraine started, as a way of recording the moment being lived through, and that her concern with violence against women now extends to the barbarity of senseless wars as well.
