About
About this event
Valencia was one of the most prolific and influential artistic centers between 1870 and 1920. Many painters were born and trained in the city, yet today only a small part of that generation is remembered, mainly the so-called great masters of the Valencian school, even though most of them lived outside their native city. Of the broad field of painters active in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, only a few biographies are well known. One of the unanswered questions is how they managed to survive in such a competitive and crowded professional environment. For many, the answer was to move to other cities and to countries in Europe and the Americas. Teaching was one of the professional paths chosen by many, but when artists depended solely on selling their work in a local art market as limited as this one, their lives were often heroic. In this highly creative context, artistic vocation could sometimes seem almost hereditary, passing easily from parents to children. The Pinazo family is a clear example and stands out among the city’s artistic dynasties, alongside the Capuz, López, Benlliure, Sorolla, and Manaut Viglietti families, among others. This transmission of craft combines practical continuity, inherited tradition, and vocation. Familiarity with artistic creation can foster a lasting commitment to the profession, as shown by the Pinazo family presented here. The great master Ignacio Pinazo Camarlench (1849-1916) had two sons who devoted themselves to art, José and Ignacio Pinazo Martínez, the first a painter and the second a sculptor, although he also painted and sang. Although Ignacio Pinazo Martínez was an important sculptor, the exhibition now focuses on the work of Marisa Pinazo Mitjans (1912-1990), daughter of José Pinazo Martínez (1879-1933), since she is the one who carries pictorial art into the third generation.
