About
About this event
The works in this exhibition are the result of years of sustained experimentation and reflection on painting and its deconstruction. Their radical simplicity, far removed from self-absorption, offers a critical response to the excess of information, irrelevant free-floating content, and overwhelming images that circulate unchecked. In Juan Sánchez’s work, there is no romantic attempt to revisit the past, to return art to craft, or to push craft into art. Instead, the focus is on materials, structures, and the basic tools of the most elementary construction, such as the compass, plumb line, and canvas, as well as on the idea of craft in its broader senses: as habitual work, as skill developed through practice, and as something linked to the sacred. As Oscar Wilde wrote, not only in art, form is the soul. It is precisely within this inseparable and complex nature of the artwork that Juan Sánchez places his attention on the body, showing that the body—any body—is not only matter, but also structure, texture, color, form, and time.
