About this event
"Teatro Magnético" is Pablo Helguera’s first exhibition in Valencia. The Mexican artist, based in New York, is widely recognized as a pioneer in social interaction art. Artist, writer, and cultural educator, Helguera presents a performative exhibition that turns the gallery into an experimental theatre. Through the lens of social media and AI, it offers a parable about how knowledge is constructed, the persistence of pseudoscience, and the need to encourage critical thinking through art. Best known for his distinctive Artnoons, in which he satirizes the art world, Helguera brings a more performative language to the Centre del Carme, transforming the room into a stage-like device where play becomes a way to reflect on human knowledge and pseudoscience. The exhibition begins with the historical phenomenon of animal magnetism, the theory proposed in the 18th century by Franz Anton Mesmer, and uses it to ask why people are still drawn to systems that claim to explain the world in a total, simple, and convincing way. Rather than treating mesmerism as a historical curiosity, the exhibition uses it as a case study for understanding how pseudosciences emerge, especially in times of social, political, or epistemological uncertainty. Without attempting a full chronology, the project creates a space where history, belief, and representation intersect in an active experience of knowledge. Installed in the Dormitorio at the CCCC, the exhibition is structured around four key elements. It opens with a historical introduction to mesmerism. The central section presents the artwork through a series of ideographic panels and twelve visual scores in the style of John Cage and Fluxus. Echoing mesmeric inductions, these scores are in fact instructions for twelve performances that will take place during the opening on 20 May in the third section of the room, a circular stage that represents the magnetic theatre. The final area is an interactive educational space where visitors can explore self-guided activities such as magnetic poetry and a card game pairing contemporary ailments with their corresponding cures.
