About
About this event
Until the end of the XII century, there is little evidence of objects made specifically to measure time. The need to mark the hours set aside for study, work, and prayer drove the mechanization of clockmaking in the late Middle Ages. Valencia holds the distinction of having installed the first clock on the Iberian Peninsula, on 10 March 1378, in Barcella Street. It was later moved to what is now known as Old Clock Street and the Clockmaker’s House. At just 10 minutes from the Seu district, MuVIM revisits the city’s clockmaking heritage through a previously unseen exhibition drawn from the rich historical and artistic holdings of the Provincial Council. The Museum of Fine Arts of the Provincial Council of Valencia presents "Precision and Ornament", an exhibition of 16 French tabletop clocks from the XIX century and two original copies of Diderot and d’Alembert’s "Encyclopédie". Curated by Pablo Bernal, the show brings together an almost unique artistic and bibliographic ensemble of French tabletop clocks dating from 1800 to 1848, along with two original volumes of the "Encyclopédie" from the founding collection of MuVIM’s library, a key element in establishing the museum as a reference point for Enlightenment culture. The restoration, adjustment, and calibration of the mechanisms were carried out by clockmakers Jesús Sánchez and José Luis Taroncher, both specialists with extensive experience in historic clocks. The exhibition aims to highlight a little-known artistic heritage, especially within decorative arts. Through the clocks, it traces the main artistic styles of the first half of the XIX century, visible in the forms, materials, and decoration of the pieces. Its dual purpose is to share the richness of the Provincial Council’s art collection and to properly catalogue and contextualize some of the most notable examples of historic clockmaking preserved there.
